Can I use a Snapchat filter to advertise?
Short answer
Yes. Businesses can run AR Filters and Sponsored AR Lenses as ads through Snapchat. The old On-Demand Geofilters stopped being supported on 10 February 2023, and their ads stopped delivering on 31 March 2023.
How filter ads work now
- Filters let people add your interactive overlay to their own Snaps. Lenses add an AR experience through the camera.
- Snapchat now directs businesses to Sponsored Lenses, which it says give brands more ways to engage through the camera.
- Anyone can build an AR experience with Snapchat’s Lens Web Builder, using free objects and animations.
Filter specs
- Static filter: PNG at 945×2048.
- Moving filter: GIF at 720×1560, 1 to 3 seconds long.
- Branding: a visible logo or brand name is required, ideally top left or top right under the interface elements.
In practice
Filters and Lenses work as awareness and engagement plays, for example a character from your game or a feature of your app that people can try on camera. AR ads are available with the App Promotion objective, but most app advertisers get installs from video ads first and add AR for launches and big moments.
