Short answer
Geofilters were location-based overlays that businesses bought for Snaps taken in a set area. Snapchat stopped supporting On-Demand Geofilters in February 2023. Brands now use Sponsored AR Filters, bought as an ad placement in Ads Manager.
What replaced geofilters
- Sponsored AR Filters are branded creatives that people overlay on top of their Snaps after capture.
- You can build one free in Lens Web Builder, or upload your own assets.
- With a Snapchat Business Account you can buy a Filter for multiple locations, age-target it, and create Smart Filters with dynamic text.
- Static filters use a 945 x 2048 PNG. Moving filters use a 720 x 1560 GIF lasting 1 to 3 seconds.
How to buy one
- In Ads Manager, click Create Ads and pick your objective.
- In the ad set, click Edit Placement, select Camera and tick AR Filters.
- Add your ad details, then review and publish.
In practice
Filters build awareness and engagement. They are not an install format. For an app or game, a filter can support a launch, a live event or a seasonal update. For installs, run the App Promotion objective with Single Image or Video ads and an App Install attachment, and keep filters as a smaller test alongside it.
