AdAttributionKit (AAK): The Post-SKAN iOS Measurement Playbook for 2026

AdAttributionKit (AAK) is Apple’s privacy-preserving ad attribution framework for app installs and eligible re-engagements. It builds on SKAdNetwork (SKAN) and interoperates with it. Both use signed, privacy-limited postbacks. AAK adds capabilities including re-engagement and configurable attribution rules on supported versions. These rules are distinct from the fixed conversion windows, and developer testing is available for both frameworks. This playbook explains the differences, the conversion-value decisions and the evidence needed before scaling an iOS campaign.

Admiral Media has managed iOS user acquisition through the measurement changes following App Tracking Transparency, across subscription apps, dating apps and AI tools. This guide separates Apple’s framework mechanics from the campaign examples: those examples illustrate measurement and optimization decisions, rather than proving an AdAttributionKit implementation. For related context, see Admiral Media’s note on self-attributing networks in iOS 15 and the iOS app marketing guide.

What is AdAttributionKit and how is it different from SKAdNetwork?

AdAttributionKit attributes installs from the App Store and alternative app marketplaces, and supports eligible re-engagement on iOS 18 and later. SKAdNetwork is an App Store install-attribution framework. AAK’s configurable attribution eligibility and cooldown rules do not make its three conversion-observation windows arbitrary. Both frameworks have testing tools. Choose the integration from the app’s OS support, ad networks and SDK or measurement partner, rather than assuming SKAN is only a legacy fallback.

Both frameworks withhold user and device identifiers from postbacks. Crowd anonymity controls how much detail can be returned. Apple considers several crowd dimensions, rather than publishing a single campaign-volume target that guarantees fine values. Delays protect privacy independently of the amount of detail returned. The AdAttributionKit developer documentation explains the framework; compare raw postback completeness with mature cohort outcomes before assuming a campaign lacks value.

AAK extends the measurement flow with eligible re-engagement, alternative app marketplace support and configurable attribution rules on supported OS versions. Click-through and view-through install attribution already exist in SKAdNetwork. Apple also provides testing for both frameworks, so a claim that SKAN has no native test path is incorrect.

How AdAttributionKit works: the core mechanics

In an AAK flow, a publisher app presents a signed ad impression. When an eligible install or re-engagement occurs, the advertised app updates conversion values and the system can send signed postbacks to the ad network. The developer can opt in to receive copies of winning postbacks. A postback is not a user record, and its conversion-value detail can be limited or absent.

There are four mechanics that every iOS marketer needs to understand before building a measurement plan.

Conversion values and crowd anonymity tiers. Define fine and coarse mappings, then inspect what Apple actually returns. Fine values are available only in the first window at eligible higher tiers. Coarse values can appear in the first window at a lower tier and in later windows; at the lowest tier, value detail can be missing and later postbacks are not sent. Missing detail is not a zero-value conversion. Campaign consolidation can be tested as a reporting trade-off, but no spend amount guarantees a tier.

Postbacks and timing. Conversion windows describe when behavior is observed, not when a postback arrives. AAK uses the same three install-conversion windows as SKAN 4, beginning at first launch and ending at days 2, 7 and 35. Random delivery delays follow the window end or an early lock. Reconcile cohorts at comparable ages and keep the delivery date separate from the conversion window.

Re-engagement attribution. On supported versions, AAK can attribute an eligible click that opens an already-installed app. The impression, universal link and advertised-app integration must meet Apple’s requirements, and limits can prevent a postback. View-through ads do not generate AAK re-engagement postbacks. SKAN install attribution does not provide this conversion type, but that does not mean every other form of iOS retargeting measurement was impossible.

Attribution rules and developer testing. AAK can configure how long impressions remain eligible and the cooldown between conversions on supported OS versions. These are attribution rules, not permission to extend a conversion-value window. Apple’s attribution-rule documentation explains the distinction. For tests, both AAK and SKAN support Developer Mode on iOS 18 and later; older devices use the supported testing profile. AAK testing requires a production Apple ID, not a sandbox Apple ID.

AdAttributionKit vs SKAdNetwork: a side-by-side comparison

Support both frameworks when the app’s networks and measurement integration require it. Apple documents how the APIs interoperate and select one winning impression across frameworks. The table separates install-conversion windows, attribution eligibility and testing rather than treating them as the same control.

Capability SKAdNetwork (SKAN 4) AdAttributionKit (AAK)
Install attribution Yes Yes
Re-engagement attribution Not supported as a re-engagement conversion type Eligible click-driven re-engagement on supported OS versions
Conversion windows SKAN 4: three fixed conversion-observation windows Three fixed install-conversion windows; separate configurable attribution eligibility and cooldown rules
Conversion value granularity Coarse and fine, gated by crowd anonymity Coarse and fine, gated by crowd anonymity
Developer testing mode Testing tools available, including Developer Mode on iOS 18+ Developer Mode on iOS 18+; supported profile on older devices
View-through and click-through Both supported for installs; view-through from SKAN 2.2 Both supported for installs; re-engagement is click-only
2026 role Use where the ad network and SDK integration require it Use for supported install and re-engagement integrations

AAK and SKAN can operate together. Check the ad network, app SDK and measurement partner requirements before changing either. Validate the update APIs and postback decoding as one integration, and keep install and re-engagement reporting separate. A migration plan should be based on supported capabilities and verified output, not an assumed date when SKAN will disappear.

The Admiral Media iOS Signal Integrity Framework

Measurement on privacy-safe iOS is not a reporting problem, it is a signal-design problem. The Admiral Media iOS Signal Integrity Framework is the sequence the Admiral Media team uses to turn AdAttributionKit and SKAdNetwork postbacks into reliable optimisation signals.

  1. Map the value moment: Choose an observable event with a plausible relationship to revenue or retention, such as a trial start or paid conversion. Test that relationship against mature cohorts instead of assuming one event predicts value for every app.
  2. Design the conversion-value schema: Map events to the available fine and coarse states in each observation window. Define both layers and document missing values separately, so a privacy-limited postback is not counted as zero revenue.
  3. Consolidate for anonymity: Compare raw postback detail before and after a justified campaign consolidation. Volume can matter, but several crowd dimensions determine the tier, and consolidation must not erase meaningful audience or market differences. Treat it as a test, not a guaranteed unlock.
  4. Validate in developer mode: Test eligible impressions, value updates, signatures and postback decoding before scaling. Use the Apple-supported test route for the device OS. Both AAK and SKAN can be tested; a successful development test does not establish production data completeness or campaign performance.
  5. Bid to modeled value: Verify which conversion inputs the chosen platform can ingest and use for its supported value-bidding strategy. Register the mapping in the measurement integration and check the resulting campaign reports. Apple exposing a value does not mean every network can use it for bidding.
  6. Layer re-engagement: Add a separate re-engagement plan where the app, network and SDK support eligible AAK clicks. Use renewal or win-back outcomes to evaluate it, with install reporting kept separate.
  7. Reconcile across windows: Read early and late postback windows together, and reconcile against in-app revenue trends, so short-term signals never override the cohort economics that actually pay back spend.

The sequence starts with event definitions and implementation checks, then moves to bidding and evaluation. It helps identify whether a weak result comes from the app funnel, missing signals or a campaign decision before more budget is committed.

Building a conversion-value strategy for AdAttributionKit

A conversion-value strategy maps observable app behavior onto the limited values Apple can return. Start with the signals needed for a business decision, rather than using every available code. A larger number of schema buckets does not itself define Apple’s anonymity threshold. Check event frequency, predictive value and the receiving platform’s supported mapping before choosing what to bid toward.

Conversion values are one input to an advertising platform’s measurement and optimization, not its only information source. A predictive proxy is useful only if it tracks later revenue or retention in comparable cohorts. Keep observed and modeled outcomes separate, and recheck that relationship when the product or audience changes. For Google Ads, follow the documented SKAN schema integration: its current guidance distinguishes the fine values used for modeling and optimization from coarse values Apple can return.

For subscription apps, the value moment is rarely the install. It is the trial start or the first paid conversion. Admiral Media’s work with subscription clients consistently shows that bidding toward downstream value rather than installs is what moves return on ad spend. In the engagement of ChatPDF, an AI document tool, the Admiral Media team rebuilt the account structure around Admiral Media best practices and introduced value bidding with an added LTV signal, testing target CPA against target ROAS. The case study reports improvements in ROAS, subscriptions and CAC. ROAS is a revenue-to-ad-spend measure, not a direct measure of net profit.

  • +320% ROAS: ChatPDF’s overall return on ad spend growth after Admiral Media moved the account to value-based bidding and a restructured campaign architecture.
  • +156% subscriptions: Subscription growth delivered while scaling spend, not by cutting it.
  • -42% CAC: Customer acquisition cost reduction achieved alongside that scale.

The channel split is instructive for anyone allocating iOS budget. Admiral Media managed ChatPDF across both Google and Meta, and each channel rewarded a different winning strategy.

On Google, the campaign reached 320% ROAS year-over-year growth, with +142% subscriptions and a 38% reduction in CAC. On Meta, the same account structure produced 280% ROAS year-over-year growth, +171% subscriptions, and a 45% reduction in CAC. These are reported channel outcomes, not an AAK-versus-SKAN comparison. They support evaluating the channel strategy separately; they do not establish that a particular Apple schema or anonymity tier caused the gains.

How signal quality and channel choice affect iOS performance

Signal quality and channel choice both matter. An accurate event definition cannot compensate for the wrong audience, creative, auction economics or product funnel. Evaluate measurement reliability alongside those factors rather than claiming that every major channel will perform well once its signals are clean.

The PURE case illustrates acquisition-source testing, rather than a comparison of Apple attribution frameworks. For PURE, a dating app targeting competitive cost-per-install and high day-7 ROAS on US Android, the Admiral Media team tested a programmatic DSP against an established self-attributing network with distinct budgets and platform-tailored creative. The difference in measured efficiency was stark.

PURE cost per install by acquisition source Column chart comparing PURE cost per install: the self-attributing network at 9.43 US dollars versus the programmatic DSP at 2.44 US dollars, from the Admiral Media PURE case study. PURE: Cost Per Install by Source $0 $5 $10 $9.43 Self-attributing network $2.44 Programmatic DSP
PURE cost per install by acquisition source: self-attributing network at $9.43 versus programmatic DSP at $2.44 (roughly four times lower). Source: Admiral Media PURE case study.

The programmatic source delivered a cost per install of $2.44, about 74% lower than the self-attributing network’s $9.43, while exceeding day-7 ROAS goals and lowering CPI by 74%. That performance unlocked expansion into new market entries. These figures describe a US Android acquisition-source comparison. They do not measure AAK, SKAN or an iOS schema change.

For an iOS test, specify the app, market, channel, creative, budget, eligible attribution type and cohort age. Confirm the framework implementation with actual postbacks, then compare the relevant revenue or retention outcome. The PURE figures cannot supply that missing iOS evidence, and neither campaign consolidation nor an AAK integration guarantees a fine value or better efficiency.

Creative and systematic testing compound the same effect. In Admiral Media’s long-running work with NeuroNation, a science-backed brain-training app, intensive creative testing and a structured test-and-learn approach using the team’s pRank methodology lifted ROAS by 117% and cut CPI by 39%, alongside +66% installs, +32% purchases, and +42% net cohort revenue over the measured period. The case concerns creative and campaign testing. It does not isolate an AAK conversion-value schema effect.

Common AdAttributionKit mistakes to avoid in 2026

The fastest way to waste iOS budget under AdAttributionKit is to treat it as a reporting tool rather than a signal system. The recurring mistakes the Admiral Media team sees fall into a short list.

Common errors include treating missing value detail as zero, confusing an observation window with a delivery date, assuming an arbitrary conversion-window length, and failing to check the receiving platform’s schema support. AAK re-engagement also requires an eligible click and the right app integration. Test the mapping and postback processing before scaling, then reconcile mature cohorts; a successful development test does not guarantee production coverage.

For a deeper grounding in the terminology referenced here, the Admiral Media mobile marketing glossary defines the core measurement concepts. Apple’s own SKAdNetwork documentation and App Tracking Transparency documentation remain the authoritative references for how the underlying privacy mechanics behave.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AdAttributionKit?

AdAttributionKit is Apple’s privacy-preserving framework for app-install and eligible re-engagement attribution. It builds on SKAdNetwork and can work alongside it. Signed postbacks contain limited attribution information without user or device identifiers; the detail returned depends on crowd anonymity. It does not come with a published date when SKAN must be replaced.

Is AdAttributionKit replacing SKAdNetwork?

AAK extends the available capabilities and interoperates with SKAN. Which APIs an app needs depends on its networks, SDK and supported OS versions. Validate those requirements before changing a working integration. Apple’s interoperability documentation does not establish a universal migration deadline or require every advertiser to treat SKAN as a fallback.

How is AdAttributionKit different from SKAdNetwork?

AAK supports eligible re-engagement and alternative app marketplaces, plus configurable attribution rules on supported versions. Its three install-conversion observation windows remain fixed. SKAN already supports click-through and view-through install attribution and has testing tools. Developer Mode on iOS 18 and later supports both frameworks; it is not an AAK-only sandbox.

What is crowd anonymity in AdAttributionKit?

Crowd anonymity controls the level of detail returned in a postback. The tier depends on multiple crowd dimensions, not a published campaign-spend threshold. Fine values can appear in the first eligible higher-tier postback; coarse values can appear in eligible first or later postbacks. Missing conversion detail must remain missing, rather than being reported as zero revenue.

How should I set conversion values for AdAttributionKit?

Choose events observable within each fixed conversion window and check whether they predict a mature business outcome. Define fine and coarse mappings, validate the SDK updates and decoding, and confirm the chosen network can use those signals in its supported bid strategy. A schema can support optimization without guaranteeing performance or full postback detail.

Does AdAttributionKit support re-engagement campaigns?

Yes, on supported OS versions and with an eligible click-driven integration. An already-installed app must open through the supported flow, and re-engagement limits can mean no postback is generated. AAK does not return view-through re-engagement postbacks. Confirm network, SDK and universal-link support before building a win-back campaign around it.

How do signal quality and channel choice affect iOS performance?

Signal quality does not always matter more than channel choice. Both can constrain results, together with creative, product behavior and acquisition cost. Test the event mapping and reporting reliability, then compare channels on the same outcome and cohort age. The Android source comparison in this article does not prove a particular iOS framework effect.
