Creative testing

What to test in Reddit ads

These ideas come from Reddit's creative best practices, including its study of over 100,000 ads. Treat them as test ideas, not rules: results depend on your audience and offer.

Headline tests

  1. Brand name in the headline

Reddit saw an average 6.5% improvement in conversion rate and CPA when headlines named the brand. Test with and without it.

  2. Speak to the reader

Second-person words like “you” and “yours” make the message personal. Test them against a neutral line.

  3. Lead with a question

A question can engage people around a problem they recognise. Test it against a plain statement.

  4. Show the price

Reddit says clear price points make clicks more intentional. Test a headline with your price against one without.

  5. Fresh variations

Reddit suggests keeping at least a third of headlines unique and refreshing them every 3 to 4 weeks. Test new phrasing on that cycle.

Creative tests

  1. Captions and on-screen text

Mobile users often watch with the sound off. Test captioned video against a version without.

  2. Logo in the top left

Feed readers look to the top left first, where usernames sit. Test a top-left logo against your usual placement.

  3. Brand in 3 seconds

Reddit recommends showing your brand within the first 3 seconds of a video. Test an early logo against a late reveal.

  4. Shorter video

Reddit notes that videos longer than 30 seconds tend to be less effective. Test a shorter cut against your current length.

  5. Show the product

Reddit says showing how the product works encourages purchase. Test product-in-use footage against lifestyle shots.

Before launch

Eight checks before a Reddit campaign goes live

  1. Keep headlines short

Headlines can run to 300 characters, but Reddit recommends 100, or 80 where truncation is a risk.

  2. Match the display URL

The display URL must use the same domain as your destination URL, and the landing page must match the ad.

  3. Keep URLs out of headlines

Reddit asks advertisers not to put URLs in ad headlines unless the law requires it.

  4. Add a thumbnail

Conversation placement and compact view use a thumbnail. Upload a 400 × 300 px image rather than relying on the automatic one.

  5. Caption every video

Mobile users often have sound off. Add closed captions, and make sure any spoken language matches the ad copy.

  6. Watch your capitals

No more than 50% of ad copy can be capitalised, and emojis or symbols should not be used just to grab attention.

  7. Set up app measurement

App promotion campaigns need separate Android and iOS ad groups, with MMP postbacks, or SKAdNetwork for iOS.

  8. Submit 48 hours early

Review usually takes up to a day. Reddit recommends submitting at least 48 hours before launch, and most edits restart review.

Reddit ad specs, answered

Short answers to the questions we hear most when teams prepare Reddit creative.

300 characters for every format, but Reddit recommends keeping headlines to 100 characters, or 80 if truncation is a concern. In Max campaigns it suggests at least 5 headlines under 50 characters.

What size should Reddit image ads be?

1440 × 1080 px at 4:3 works across devices. For mobile, Reddit also recommends 1:1 at 1080 × 1080, 4:5 at 1080 × 1350 and 16:9 at 1920 × 1080 px. Files can be JPG, PNG or GIF up to 3 MB.

2 seconds to 15 minutes, though Reddit recommends 5 to 30 seconds. Files can be MP4 or MOV up to 1 GB, at 30 FPS or less.

How long can a Reddit free-form ad be?

40,000 characters of body text, with up to 20 images and 5 videos. Reddit suggests showing 3 to 6 lines of plain text in the feed, and adding a thumbnail so media shows there.
